Everyone that has graced our earth long enough to go through his or her teenage years, has reached a stage in their life that is known as puberty. Puberty, while different for everyone, is a time in life where the largest hormonal and sexual changes take place. Common characterstics that are defined during this time are the changes in voice (mainly in men), enlargement of breasts (in women), development of pubic hair, etc.
One frequent ‘side effect’ during puberty is the more frequent occurance of pimples. Pimples are a commonly occuring lesion on the surface of the skin that are the result of by swollen or otherwise blocked pores. Most often a result of acne, they may also be caused by other unrelated conditions such as smallpox or even some bug bites. In all cases, a ‘pimple’ is just a accumulation of puss located under the skin. It is a concentration of dead white blood cells (and other matter) that come from from the body’s attempt to ward off this infection – whether it is acne, a disease or a bug bite.
Noone that I have met likes pimples, and they have become a huge social issue in today’s society. This is largely because of the direct affect that pimples have on the way someone looks and many people derive their sense of worth based on the way they look. Even though the exact opposite may be true, seeing pimples on someone makes them appear ‘dirty’.
It isn’t hard to eliminate or reduce a pimple, all you have to do is squeeze on the area surrounding the pimple. This action will cause the small section of the skin where the pimple is located to pop, allowing the pimple to loose it’s internal puss outwards. This is the most frequently used method, however, it is usually discouraged by dermatologists. Dermatologists have proven that the action of squeezing a pimple you can actually force some of the puss and bacteria to be pushed deeper into the skin. This will, in turn, cause more infection to develop. Often times the person’s hands are dirty and this will also be the cause of prolonged infection.
Proper treatment includes keeping the areas as clean as possible and keeping any known irritants away from the skin. In many cases, if the source of the irritation is removed, the pimples will clear up themselves. While figuring out the cause of the ‘irritation’ is during many cases of acne is difficult, it is worth trying. Often there are simple solutions that have been found to be very effective.
