If you have sensitive or dry skin and you also have acne, you will need to take care to, not only treat the acne, but to look after your skin. Most acne remedies will dry out your skin as they are designed to prevent the production of oil and if you already have dry skin this will just increase your problems . Your skin could become red, flaky and irritated. If you have skin that is sensitive the chemicals in many of the acne remedies will result in irritation and redness so you must be especially careful which treatments you use. Dry and Sensitive Skin Treatment As we get older our skin has a tendency to become drier as the cells begin to produce a lesser amount of sebum. Elastin and collagen in the skin are damaged and are less efficiently repaired, which leads to to less elastic, drier skin. Additionally as women reach the menopause the levels of estrogen decrease which also causes the skin to dry out. Dry skin can also be a result of very cold weather and for some of us with sensitive skin it can easily be irritated by harsh ingredients in cosmetics and skin preparations as well as fragrances and rough fabrics. Acne Treatments For Dry or Sensitive Skin 1. Cleansing Products A skincare routine including very gentle cleansing with a very mild cleanser and moisturizing is considered necessary if you have dry or sensitive skin. Cleansers that can be purchased especially for those with acne are not very appropriate for these skin types. They contain very harsh chemicals for curing the acne but will probably result in irritation and redness for those with sensitive skin. You need to select a gentler cleanser instead that contains only mild ingredients and will not irritate your skin any further. Don’t wash your face too frequently and on no account scrub vigorously or use a rough washcloth in an attempt to get rid of the dirt that is believed to be a cause of acne. This will only result in increased irritation and distribute the acne causing bacteria around your skin which will inevitably result in more flare ups. Cleansing twice a day is enough using a gentle soap. You can use either your hands or a freshly boiled soft washcloth or if at all possible use disposable cotton pads. 2. Moisturizing For Dry and Sensitive Skin You need to use a good quality moisturizer for dry skin but ensure you use a preparation that is light and that will not increase the oil on the skin which will only . Heavy lotions and creams are unsuitable as they will clog the pores and result in further irritation. 3. Acne Treatments For Dry or Sensitive Skin Some of the chemicals that may be used in acne treatments include vitamin A derivatives such as retinol, salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. For sensitive or dry skin choose one with a very low concentration at first to see how your skin is affected. If it does not cause irritation and redness you could use a product with a higher concentration. Don’t use all over your face but use a only a small amount directly where there are pimples and apply only once a day until your skin gets used to it. You could also consider using a natural cure for acne such as tea tree oil, either in a ready made preparation containing tea tree oil, or by making a solution of pure tea tree oil diluted in water and applying it to your problem areas. Tea tree oil has proved to be nearly as successful as benzoyl peroxide but does not dry out the skin. In Conclusion Dry and sensitive skins can get acne and require particular care so that you don’t make your skin condition much worse while you are treating your acne. Always use acne remedies with as gentle ingredients as you can and consider trying acne home remedies as a replacement for the harsher ready made products available.
