Male skin care is more important than ever!
More and more men of all ages are taking an interest in the care of their skin and so they should. Your skin will have to last you 80-90 years (hopefully!) So congratulations all you guys who have landed here, give yourself a pat on the back! Why? Because male skin care has never been more important than it is today.
Male skin care is vital for keeping your youthful appearance and attractiveness. Ask any woman what they prefer in a man, a muscular body or a youthful face? If you replied a youthful face you’re right!
Women have changed a lot in the last few decades. They’ve changed their attitudes towards careers, marriage and of course men. Some of these changes have been brought about by necessity, families can no longer get by on one wage. So women have returned to the full time work force, some willingly, some not. They have also changed their opinion on what defines masculinity. Its not some hyper muscled strong man who will drag her back to the cave anymore! So what makes a man attractive these days. A good body, a youthful face and a sense of humour are probably the most important attributes.
However this is a page about male skin care not seeking a partner so we’ll move right along… Another thing worth mentioning first; Your appearance is also very important in your career, especially in the corporate world. Its not right, no one should be judged on their appearance, but it happens all the time both on a conscious and sublimal level.
Of course women have been aware of this for ever, but at least we can camouflage their skin problems under a layer or two of make up, you don’t have that to fall back on. So here we go, is male skin care very different from female skin care? No, not really. All the pages in this site can be used by you, but I know you hate perfumed things in pretty pink containers! So read on…..
Male skin care 101
Skin is skin and there’s not much difference between male skin care and female skin care. Men’s skin tends to be thicker by about 20% and has a greater supply of peripheral blood vessels to nourish it. Men’s skin is also richer in collagen and elastin which means it ages slower than women’s skin – hardly seems fair! It also tends to be oilier especially in adolescence.
At its most basic, skin care for men means cleansing and protecting in the morning and cleansing and nourishing at night. Just these basic steps are all you need to keep you looking great and slow the aging process.
Young men and teenage boys may also have a problem with oily skin or acne. If your acne is out of control, read the teenage-acne page for more detailed advice on the treatment of acne.
The real tricky part is knowing what type of skin you have and what products to use on it. Here’s a simple way to establish your skin type. If your skin feels tight after you wash it you have dry skin, if its shiny half an hour after washing, it’s oily. Neither of these two? You have normal skin.
I always recommend natural skin care for men because it’s better absorbed by the skin and you’re not putting a chemical cocktail on your face. Skin absorbs chemicals which could build up in the body and affect your health. Natural skin care is usually better for your budget too!
Cleansing your face prevents oil build up and the formation of pimples and blackheads. It keeps your skin smooth and looking good. Soap dries out your skin and strips away the protective “acid mantle” which allows bacteria to attack.
The most important thing you can do for your face is protect it from the damaging rays of the sun. Sun damage causes wrinkles, pigmentation and even skin cancer. Always use a natural sunscreen of at least 15 SPF. However these days it’s important to establish there are no nano-particles in your natural sunscreen (not easy to do!)
